Cluedo. New version.

Anyone here not played Cluedo? I think its fair to say everyone at least knows it. The new version (aka Cluedo: Discover the Secrets) takes the original whodunnit and add some more weapons and updating a few old ones (poison, trophy, dumbbell, axe, baseball bat) as well as adding a new set of twists and renaming some elements of the game. The dice now have a question mark on one which are for chance cards which add random factors to the game. Roll a question mark or land on a ? square and draw a card. These cards add the ability to block people from seeing your suspect/room/weapon cards, allow you to move again, send someone back to their starting tile or draw a clock card. Draw the eighth clock and you get murdered by the murderer and you’re out. Kinda tough if you are the murderer. Suicide due to extreme guilt perhaps?

The terms are slightly different as you now start a rumour to see someone elses cards and each of the characters has a special ability which can be played once during the game (move twice, start two rumours etc…) Some of the rooms are different names (such as observatory) but its still working round the rooms and rattling off suspects before dashing to the sauna to make the accusation. Sauna indeed…

So this Cluedo plays out more like an action film with a race against the clock rather than the slow logic puzzle of the original (which we have tucked away as well) but is it any good?

Well sort of. I have to admit a slightly sneering attitude to the concept and how it had changed but after a dozen or so games we are of the opinion that its not better or worse than the original. It’s an updated version that sits just as well alongside the original if you are in the mood for some light action. Our games tend to get a little tense towards the end and one game ended up with someone losing early because another player hadn’t revealed their cards properly. It nearly was a murder scene worthy of a game of Cluedo.
