quick c4d test render

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

More texture work. More zbrush loving. More cowbell. More tiredness.

Using GoZ I dumped old bod here into c4d to do a quick test render of the material i’ve been painting and he’s coming along nicely.

The specular is far too high but then I should probably do a map for that as well. I think a tiny bit more work on the skin then onto the rest of the body.

And the blood shall flow

Monday, June 28th, 2010

owwwww ooowww oooooooooooooooooowwwwww I’ve just sliced a chunk out of my finger while carving up a model kit.

I recently got hold of a 40k Valkyrie model kit as reference for the 3d model of a i’m putting together in Cinema 4d. I’ve been slowly putting the kit together and its helping no end with the production of the 3d model. Mainly because its making me go back and rework bits i’ve ballsed up on. I don’t just want to make a 3d CGI model of a plastic kit but its helping me see the shape of the bodywork and the angles which I just can’t get from a few screenshots from the web. The problem is I’m holding bits of the kit together while looking at it from angles then having to put it down in bits. I can’t glue (or rather plastic weld) bit together as I need to paint the inside parts like the cargo hold and cockpit. I want to paint these bits but at the same time its annoying me that I can’t stick it all together. I think a trip up to GW for some paint is called for.

I’m regressing back to an earlier point in my life…

There was a crit on a forum a few years back when someone posted a model they had made of a Rhino in 3d. A bloke (who I seem to remember was working in the 3d industry) just pointed out that it was nothing more that a 3d version of a kit. None of the parts had been setup as if it was real, such as the track going into the bodywork or the metal grille actually covering something. Its a very valid point which has always stuck with me when i’ve modeled 3d stuff. I don’t know if i’ve ever pulled it off properly but the thought has always been there.

Anyway, between the blood loss and the use of plastic weld in a small, badly ventilated cellar, I need to go and lie down.

oh yeah, screenshot.

He’s not pretty…

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

…but he sure is starting to look good.

Between zbrush crashing about half a dozen times and a memory error on c4d (must remember to not use such big textures) i’m shocked I got anything done on him. Arms next? Or maybe his mouth guard thingy. The head robes need a good texture to help it get picked out against the body robes. Must remember to move his head up and to the left slightly.
Bit narked that some of his texture work on the head can’t be seen but such is life.

Glass jaw

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Prompted by a tweet last week I signed up for subdivision_modeling last week to take part in a contest to model a humanoid head with a metal jaw. As I have often tried to get into zbrush (only after owning it for 5 years) I figured it would be a good place to start. I modeled a quick head in c4d then, using GoZ, plopped it into zbrush and set to. Sadly Wednesday was a bit of a write off as was Sunday, but I managed to get something together which came out pretty well for me. I wasn’t too happy with the metal jaw (shades of 40k ork having an offspring with Trapjaw from MoTU) but the head has given me the Idea to put it into the mechanicus model. voila! instant head. I was always a bit iffy over the head for him as I didn’t know how to tackle it so this is perfect. The jaw is hidden by his collar thingy so no problems there and his eyes can be done with the mass of bionic eyes I started.

These are some test renders to try out material and displacement transfers from zbrush to c4d. Its not perfect but its pretty good. I didn’t expect c4d to produce 100% perfect results but i’m happy with this so far as I have never textured anything in zbrush before. I will spend a bit of time on finishing the textures but not too much as the head is hardly visible under the robes.

Remember to spell it properly or everyone will think its pr0n

I’m still working on the Alice picture when i get a chance, and I’ve been updating the photoshop files masks to sort out the grass mainly but have got to a point where i can now get back to some 3d stuff for the scene. So in a move which will no doubt get the Capito boyos in a flap, i’ve started to model a hookah for the caterpillar. Logic sort of dictated the colour should be blue to match the caterpillar but i’m not sure if it will work as it may just end up blending into him. A strong contrasting colour may work better but for the moment i’ve been messing with the shape, form and texture for the damn thing.

These are basic c4d materials with a texture map to add some detail at the top of the long stem thingy and a photoshop texture to make the pattern around the middle of the glass bowl. Its a repeating texture which repeats 6 times around the body and adds some displacement and some noise to the glass. there is only a single light to add some highlights on one side as I will import it into the scene that the mushroom was rendered in to use the same lighting. I also need to add the tube thingy but probably wont until big blue is modeled up as i want to figure out his mouth position and length of the tube.
